Favourite Friday – August 9 Edition: Gwyneth, Balmain, and Docs

August 6, 2010

Ally: We have sort of survived the first week of daycare for BabyG and the first week back at work for moi. Actually, I think we did fairly well. Baby resisted quite a bit, and it broke my heart to see him so upset, but he’s transitioning well. And me?…Well…I would be lying if I told you I didn’t have moments of pure bliss when sipping coffee in my home office at 7:30am, actually getting some work done without feeling the pressure to get something written/edited/researched before the screams come piercing out of the baby monitor. This bliss brings guilt, which is the magical gift that is motherhood.

Another highlight this week was my August issue of Vogue. Gwyneth Paltrow appears on the cover and the interview is priceless. I would also egg my own house for a pair of the American Eagle Jeans she wears in the piece:

Yes, you read that correctly. AMERICAN EAGLE. Gwyneth Paltrow is wearing discount designs. She’s one of the people. Her shirt is Pink Tartan, which is often sold at Foreign Affair. So basically, if you see me dressed in this exact outfit next week, feel free to die of jealousy.

I am hurting for a pair of relaxed rip jeans.

In other news, I would like to apologize for making our blog NSFW the other day. It was a low point in the G household and I basically couldn’t even muster the energy to phone it in. So I porned it in. I thought a little bum would be better than nothing. Perhaps this was a mistake.

Another favourite this week is the suit. I’ve been wearing maternity leave stylin’s for the last 11 months, so you have no idea how amazing it feels to actually dress up again. I’ve been brushing AND flat ironing my hair each morning. During my lunch break yesterday, I spent some time reviewing Style dot com’s fall report. The suit is indeed back, and this one needs to be in my closet as soon as I sell our family car.

Adore Balmain. I’ve been meaning to take the bus more anyway, and it’s about time baby learned how to walk. Daycare is a ten minute drive, so the half hour trot would do his thunder thighs some good.

Crappy Pop Video of the Week: Something that has been playing non-stop in my head this past week.

L-A: I get mocked for last week’s song being something you listen to in the aisles of a joint like Super Natural Foods and then Ally brings us this? This is drinking boxed wine and ice cream floats alone because your boyfriend slept with your roommate music. Even the girl in the video is ordering wine and a G&T. You know you’ve had a rough week when you order a side of gin with your pinot grigio.

However, I do like her boots. At least I think I do. It was hard to get past the singer stalking her. I think they were Doc Martens and I’ve been thinking how I might want a pair.

I just can’t figure out what I’d wear them with. I’m not a leggings girl or a skinny jeans girl, and that seems to be the way I see them worn.  It’s not anti-leggings or anti-skinny jeans, it’s that they’re anti-L-A. Thoughts? Any suggestions on how to wear them without looking like an extra from Singles?

This is one of those rare weeks when, despite my displeasure in Ally’s music, I do enjoy her clothing picks. Hell, I even like the Balmain. After last fall‘s bedazzled Sargeant Pepperish jackets, I wasn’t sure I’d ever like Balmain. But I totally want that suit. I’m currently doing an inventory of things I have to sell to get it. How much could you get for a husband on Kijiji? People sell perfectly good wedding/engagement band sets, so why not sell a husband? I also love the Pink Tartan on Gwyneth. Say what you will about her GOOPiness, but I kind of like her. I might like her shirt more, but I like her.

Some other things I’m liking this week? I’m still having way too much fun with the Smouldering Men Appreciation Society.  Yesterday was Classic Smoulder and featured heavy hitters like Marlon Brando and Cary Grant. Dudes who set the standard for smouldering.

I’m also looking forward to the launch party of the AGNS Young Patrons Circle. Culture + Art + Parties = FPQT is there with bells on!  We’re not just looking forward to the party, we’re looking forward to what these young patrons have in store for the cultural landscape of Halifax.

And finally, let’s have a second video. This one was nominated last week when I needed ideas. I enjoyed it much more than Ally’s video choice.

{UPDATE FROM ALLY: Dude, I actually like that song. NICE! We’re agreeing all over the place today!}

Docs! I want. Loved my 8 hole docs in the 90s. And they come in a bunch of colours and finishes: Cherry red? Gold? Actually I already have one pair in patent black, only they give me blisters, which the originals never did.
I’d wear them with a skirt, totally. Something black and edgy, maybe?

      Or cossack pants.

I don’t know if anyone wants to see me in cossack pants. Where would you get cossack pants?

So do I see a “dress like Gwyneth” episode coming soon?

I would dress like Gwyneth for a year if I could. I just need a wealthy benefactor.

I just laughed out loud at Ally describing her baby as having “thunder thighs”. Luckily, I’m the only one in the office.

I’ve always hated Gwyneth, even before GOOP, but that outfit does rock.

I love all of these things!! Gwyneth, Balmain, the return of the suit (LOVE!), Docs, Smouldering Men, American Eagle and…Pink Tartan!

Just wanted to also point out that Pink Tartan is Canadian, non? Founded in Toronto, PT shows at Toronto Fashion Week. If we play six degrees, the mastermind behind the label is Kimberley Newport-Mimran, wife of Club Monaco and Joe Fresh founder/genius, Joe Mimran. So it’s almost like Gwyneth is wearing something from our local Superstore! hah.

And say what you will about Gwyneth, I ADORE her. She is so classy and chic and down-to-earth. And as much as I think GOOP is a little strange, I can’t help how happy I get everytime I get a GOOP newsletter. I secretly love Gwyneth writing to me, giving me fashion/food/beauty/diet advice, and telling me what recipe to make this week or what outragesouly over-priced holiday in Spain or France I should take but can’t afford.

PS – I also love the Crappy Pop Video, but only because it’s trademark Ally, and they are always hysterical. However, I seem to love L-A’s taste in music, so I am not at all opposed to my favrouite fashion blog helping me discover new tunes now and then…

I should trademark the Crappy Pop Video segment of our blog. It’s beyond awesome.

You really should. Even though sometimes your videos make me want to stab myself in the eyes. or ears. it depends on the song/video.

It makes you want to stab yourself with love though. You’d miss them if they weren’t around.

I would maim for G’s jeans…I’ve also been looking for some relaxed ripped-up denims, but have yet to find any I like. Let me know if you find some great ones, Ally.

I still hold that there is nothing wrong with dressing like a Singles extra. I would love to have a pair or two of DM’s in my collection again.

Have you seen what they wore in Singles? It’s not all that pretty.

You’d need to change your wardrobe to incorporate Docs.
