Prom Dress Throw Down – It’s Oscar Night!

March 7, 2010

AllyG: In honour of Oscar night, I have accepted L-A’s twitter challenge and will be posting photos of me wearing my prom dress in current day. I bribed the husband to take a couple photos (he is now allowed to play xbox tonight instead of having to watch me bitch about the dresses on the red carpet). In the following photos I will be sporting my prom dress from 13 YEARS AGO, a royal blue sequined number that I designed myself, as you will certainly be able to tell from the photos. My mom’s friend helped me make it. I am holding onto it in case BabyG would like to wear it some day. Without further ado:

First photo. BabyG couldn’t get enough of the shine. Also, I thought it would be funny to say, “Here’s a photo of me in my prom dress holding my baby!” A sentence my father hoped he would never, ever have to hear. I love you, Dad!

I admire the way Renee Zellweger poses like it is her last pose ever on Earth.

I tried to replicate, but kept laughing. The husband suggested I swiffer while posing as I’d, “been promising to swiffer all week anyway.” It helped!

So, there, now it is up to you ladies. We want your prom dress photos. It’s a throw down, bitches.

Sidebar: Excuse the hair, it’s a Sunday…give me a break here. Also, I’m not sure why my dress is sparkling purple  on top like that. I didn’t bedazzle it that way.

L-A: I have no idea where my prom dress is. And I’m pretty sure I couldn’t fit into if I did know where it is.  So you don’t get me swiffering, you get teenage me in my dress. Which also mean you’re stuck with what I can dig out of my old photo albums…I couldn’t find any really good photos. Ah well. Here they are:

Did I cut my parents out of the photo? Why, yes, I did. That is because I value my life and I know that my mother would kill me if she knew I put pictures of her on the internets.  As for my outfit…in hindsight, I did not love my shoes. But it was 1996 in Western Newfoundland and there weren’t a lot of options for cute shoes for size 10 feet that would work with an off-white-ish dress.

Here’s a shot of me receiving my “diploma” (it was our graduation/prom and held in May, so they couldn’t actually give us diplomas and we were told that we couldn’t have both a cap and gown and a prom)

Oh yes, that is my high school gym decorated by 17 and 18 year olds.

I’m not embarassed of my date, he wasn’t a bad looking guy…but I felt a bit mean putting his picture on the internets without his knowledge. In hindsight, this might have been mean. If you’re out there Dave and reading a ridiculous fashion blog, let me know if I can put your teenage self on the internet and I will do that.

Of course, I didn’t have the time to hide the faces of all my classmates, so you get to see all of them in all their prom finery. Meet the Pasadena Academy Class of ’96:

White was not a popular choice that year (I need to repeat that my dress wasn’t actually white…it was a slightly off white. And as a bit of a non-sequiter: it was made by my mom).

Clearly Ally and I had very different styles as teenagers…she did sequins and I did whatever you’d call mine. What can I say? I like an empire waistline…it agrees with my hips. I’m not sure where I was going with the Shiley Temple hair…but there you go. You can’t win ’em all.

Timely post, as I came very close to buying a prom dress while in Toronto this past weekend. No, I am not kidding. It was the most beautiful dress I have ever seen.

Are you sad you didn’t buy it? Prom dresses are super fun.

Lovely dress – mine from 21 years ago!!! has long ago been destroyed by my 4 little girls. I can put on my wedding dress from 13 years ago though. Does that count?

That TOTALLY counts! In fact, that should be a whole other entry! Good thinking!!

Guys you both look adorable. Ally, you wore that dress to the YAS ball, too, yes?

I don’t actually think I have any pictures of me in my long-dead prom dress. Suffice to say that both flutter sleeves and pearl buttons were involved.

I am the worst intern lately! I will totally bring it for the wedding dress post, though, I promise.

I’m sort of surprised that you don’t have prom photos. You must have a YAS ball pic from your early days at King’s – we’ll accept that.

I think I weighed liked 90lbs at prom, so I likely didn’t want to keep the pictures.

But to counter THAT downer of a rationale, I’ve uploaded a YAS picture to the shoe porn pool, because I couldn’t think where else to put it. Yesss.

Eden, riddle me wrong here…but isn’t there a picture of the two of us in a UKC yearbook wearing our dresses? We should both check.
