Crafty Awesomeness

May 1, 2009

L-A: So, remember how I said that buying handmade is really important to me? Well, let me expand on that thought.  First of all, when I’m not blogging about fashion or writing an MA thesis, I’m crafting away at something (usually plush sock monkeys or embroidery). Secondly, it’s the reason why I work in retail. Because I could have a part-time job at the Gap (ugh, been there, done that, got a few t-shirts), but instead I work for a store that sells things that are by handmade or small-run Canadian artists and artisans.  I work there because I really believe in that kind of thing.

Now, having gotten all serious on you, I’m going to get to the point. And that is:

YESSSS! Craft fair awesomeness! This craft fair aint’ your grandma’s craft fair, kids. I’m sure your grandma is cool, but this is way awesomer than your average craft fair. This fair has a little something everyone, including the “fashion forward” in our fair city. Check out a quick selection of items that have been at previous fairs:

Orphanage Clothing – these designs by Kim Munson turn t-shirts into really hot stuff.  I hear there will be a $5 bin at her table.

Kat Miller’s awesome screenprinting. She also does t-shirts (bought one back in December) and the heart-shaped broaches you see next to the bags.

For the stylin’ toddler in your life: Bespoke Uprising – Roisin makes awesome, awesome clothing for kids and screenprints some rad onesies and tees. She also makes wallets for grown-ups.

This is a ring by Jen Bennett that I got at the last Crafters market in December. Like all her jewelry, it is beyond lovely.  Her orbit bracelets are absolutely fabulous.

And that, my friends, is just the tip of the awesome iceberg that is Halifax Crafters. So fantastic that I’m abusing the word ‘awesome’. You can see more photos of crafty goods on the Crafters site.  Better yet, head on down to the North Street Church tomorrow or Sunday and check it out for yourself. I know the weather is supposed to be crappy…but this is Halifax and rain in May shouldn’t surprise you.

AllyG: There is nothing I can say. Besides awesome. This is awesome. Plus,  as L-A mentioned it is going to rain all weekend therefore you cannot frolic around in your short-shorts outside. Please show up and support our local artists. We’ll be at a booth signing screenshots of the blog. Kidding. Sort of. I mean, if you want us to we totally will.

And now, because it’s Friday, and I’ve had a less than awesome week. I’d like to share one of my favorite outfits of all time. Yes, I love Carrie Bradshaw. It’s sooooooo predictable…blah, blah, blah. Zip it and adore the shoes.

Related to the handmade theme, I think you guys should review the clothing line made by this girl I went to high school with. I think her stuff is gorgeous but I don’t know what you would think!

Love that belt. Would do anything for that belt.

Eden, We will absolutely have to do a post about your school chum. I like saying “chum”
