Shopping Locally: Sunsets on the Eastside

April 28, 2009

L-A: Popquiz: what were you doing when you were between the ages of 16 and 18?

For me, the answer is not starting my own line of clothing with two friends. (although, I did briefly have a car wash with two friends, but that’s a story for another day/blog).  For Katryna Crabbe, Kirsten Sweet and Jackie Skinner of PEI, the answer is just that: they are the designers behind the label Sunsets on the Eastside. They upcycle vintage pieces into something totally new and adorable:

Both of these dresses, seen here at Atlantic Fashion Week, are available at Love, Me Boutique. The first dress has this updated, Virgin Suicides, prom dress look to it and the second has a great flowy look, with a hint of gold peeking through (check out some more shots from a Coast article).  Also, I want to know more about those shoes. Not only do they look hot with this dress, but I can totally picture them looking great with a number of my own outfits.

AllyG: You don’t want to know what I was doing between the ages of 16-18. More to the point, my mother doesn’t want you to know what I was doing between the ages of 16-18. Let’s just say I was wrestling with my independence. I was not, however, designing fabulous clothes. I love these pieces, L-A! Particularly the first dress (speaking of Virgin Suicides, how intense was that seen when KiKi Dunst was coming home from waking up on the football field…staring out the window with the tiara in her mouth. Haunting).

Another young designer making a lot of noise internationally is Kira Plastinina  from Russia. At 15 years old, she was the hit of Fashion Week in Russia. Her love for Paris Hilton is slightly concerning (is anyone else addicted to Paris Hilton’s BFF? The British version is AWESOME). Here are some of Kira’s designs:

Granted, her designs are for a younger audience, but they lack the creativity and inspiration found in Sunsets on the Eastside’s line. I’m not going to play the “she’s only successful because she has a rich daddy” but these clothes are mostly fitting for T.A.T.U. and a late 90’s Britney Spears…

To be fair, these are probably also the clothes I would have worn when I was 16-18, but as previously mentioned, neither I or my mother are particularly fond of those teenage memories. She’s built a great platform to grow from, and I’ll be keen to watch what she comes out with as she develops in her career.

But I’ll be watching Sunsets on the Eastside more closely. And could they be any more adorable? Photo from my favorite new mag Fashion Magazine.

Off-topic comment… I see Pretty Raccoon on your blog-roll! I started getting cute tops from her eBay shop almost 4-5 years ago. Love her cowl tops with the cut-out backs. Very cute. Nice to see her stuff at Love, Me Boutique.

Are you guys checking out the craft fair this weekend at the North St. church? Orphanage Clothing will be there with a $5 bin. Fun!

@Lauren (oh no! twitterspeak has invaded my blog posting): I love Pretty Raccoon! I really want to get one of her tops from Love, Me. The cowl necks are adorable.

I actually have a table at the Crafters fair. But I’m glad you mentioned the Orphanage $5 bin. I was trying to think of how to incorporate the fair into the blog.
