Baby got front

April 16, 2009

AllyG: As I am pregnant, I’ll want to talk about maternity fashion from time to time. I realize that the only one reading these posts might be my husband (because he’s terrified of what he refers to as my “hormone fits”), but I love fashion, and I don’t feel as though I have to ignore all trends because I’m gaining weight by the hour by dunking more donuts than Duncan.

Here’s where I have to admit something a little mortifying. When I found out I was pregnant, I was really excited to find out which celebrities would be due around the same time as me. I literally squeeled with delight when Nicole Ritchie announced she was expecting her second, and Buffy (Sarah Michelle) was expecting her first. I adore Nicole’s style, and I was SO HAPPY when I read that she is coming out with a maternity line.

Another lovely who has launched a mat line is Christian Siriano, a past winner from Project Runway.  I have learned that he is teaming up with his friends at Moody Mommas. This was the first I heard of this line so clearly I had to check it out and HOLY HELEN MY HUSBAND’S CREDIT CARD IS GOING TO GET A WORKOUT (I don’t own a credit card which admittedly does hamper my online shopping, if Jeff is reading, I LOVE YOU).

I think I know LA’s views on American Apparel, and I do agree with some points, however I did head there probably at week 15 of my pregnancy to buy some long shirts and t-shirt dresses that could pass as maternity wear. I got the idea from this blog I found. This photographer dude Ryan started taking photos of his wife as she goes through pregnancy. The result is beautiful. Here’s the thing, she’s wearing AA in all of the photos with links to the clothing  pieces under many of the photos. I haven’t read enough of the blog to know whether or not American Apparel paid this couple to write this blog, but if they did it’s great marketing. Here’s a few of my favorite looks:

She looks adorable, and this blog is the best pregnancy related blog I have found.

L-A: Okay, I will admit to a serious love/hate relationship with American Apparel. Is it the skeevy, kiddie-porn-esque ads? The skeevy owner? Is it scary lamé items? The unitards? Or maybe it’s the “classic girl” t-shirts that refuse to fit me quite right? On the other hand, I do enjoy their coloured tights and that it is clothing made in the States and not in a sweat shop.  Mostly, I don’t shop there because the staff outfits often scare me.  But despite my mixed feelings towards their clothing, I really enjoy what this woman is sporting during weeks 21 and 24.  Hell, she’s totally selling me that striped dress and I’m not even preggers.

My other thought on the wearing of American Apparel during your pregnancy is this: who am I to argue with pregnant ladies?  It has to be damn frustrating to be constantly changing shape. There are lovely things out there for pregnant ladies, such as the designs of Christian Siriano (how can you not love him? Please Ally, for the sake of this blog, email him for maternity fashion tips!), but as lovely as some of this stuff is, you’ve still got to decide whether you want to spend $200 on a pair of jeans with an elasticized panel in them. Because I’m guessing that you are all eventually hoping to go back to pants that do not involve elastic waist bands.

For me, it boils down to wearing whatever the heck works for you and your belly! You’ve got enough going on, you don’t really need the opinion of a woman who has never been pregnant. If it fits and you’re comfortable, then roll with it.   Should you need some sage fashion advice, Stacey and Clinton have tackled the subject (probably better than I could).

I’ve got just one fashion no-no for all of you glowing, mommies-to-be:

Seriously. That top is not okay. Ever.

What the what!? I didn’t know you were pregnant – CONGRATULATIONS!

AA is good for tank tops in every colour. Otherwise, it’s creepy, evil, and the garments aren’t terribly well-made.

It’s official – no, I’m not pregnant…but I do love this website. Big Ups to AllyG and her sense of style, both maternity and otherwise.

My big fashion “win” was when I went into Motherhood Maternity to pick up a nursing bra (post-pregnancy is another whole fashion world…) and the woman said, “I can’t find you in the computer….you MUST be in the computer somewhere.” She just couldn’t imagine someone who got through an entire pregnancy without having bought any of the polyester madness that is maternity fashion in Halifax.

American Apparel is essential pregnancy wear. This dress: got me through many many days of dressing. It fits as a skirt above the bump. MUST-HAVE.

Sarah M., that is the funniest story I have heard. I am also running out to get that dress.
